How to choose the right bed for homecare

How to know which hospital bed is suitable for my loved one.

There are various types of hospital beds available in the market, mainly in 2 categories – manual hospital beds and motorised electric hospital beds.

With so many options to choose from, it is difficult to select the right hospital bed for the user without understanding:

  1. What type of hospital beds are available in the market
  2. The type of user and their needs

Purchasing a suitable hospital bed not only benefits the user but also the caregiver. Read on to know how to identify the type of user and which hospital bed to select for each type of user.

Types of hospital beds available at Medical Assistance4u

At Medical Assistance4u, we offer motorised electric hospital beds that can be easily adjusted with the attached remote control.

Types of motorised electric wheelchairs:

  1. 2-function hospital beds
  2. 3- function hospital beds
  3. 5 -function hospital beds

Type of user and which hospital beds to choose

Types of users

  1. Ambulant user with deteriorating health (facing issue to sit or stand up)
  2. Wheelchair bound – user who can’t stand but able to seat on a chair/wheelchairs
  3. Bed ridden patient – partially or fully paralyzed
Ambulant user with deteriorating health

For this group of user, we would recommend the 2 function hospital bed.

The 2 function hospital bed allows caregiver and the user to adjust the inclination of the bed for both the top and bottom part of the body. 2 function is most suitable if the bed is at a comfortable height for the user to stand or sit.

Wheelchair bound users

For this group of user, we would recommend the 3 function hospital bed.

The 3 function hospital bed allows caregiver and the user to :

  1. Adjust the inclination of the hospital bed for both the top and bottom part of the body
  2. Adjustment of the height of the hospital bed

Most of the users in this category requires the assistance of their caregiver assistance for movement on and off the hospital bed. If the height of the hospital bed is too low, it causes physical strain on the caregiver because more effort is required to assist the user. For example, if user requires a diaper change on the bed, the caregiver is able to adjust the height of the hospital bed to a comfortable height (usually around the tummy area of the caregiver) for the task.

Bed ridden users

Bed ridden users are highly dependent on the hospital bed. It is especially important to choose the right hospital bed for them as they spend all of their time on the bed.

A common problem bed ridden users have is bed sores. Bed sores occurs when the user lies on the same position for prolong period of time. Bed sores usually starts with skin irritation. Without proper hygiene and medical care, bed sores might lead to severe infection and pain.

For this group of user, we would recommend the 5 function hospital bed. The 5 function hospital bed allows caregiver and the user to :

  1. Adjust the inclination of the hospital bed for both the top and bottom part of the body
  2. Adjustment of the height of the hospital bed
  3. Flip the user on both left and right side, with an auto mode available which turns the user every 30 min

The 5 function motorised electric hospital bed comes in handy especially at night, when caregiver is resting. The auto mode available can be set to run during the night without interference from the caregiver.
