2. Sedan cars with sufficient boot space

Sedan cars are 4-door passenger cars with a boot compartment that is separate from the passenger compartment. Cars with a boot compartment large enough to accommodate a wheelchair can be used to transport both the wheelchair user and their wheelchair from place to place.

The caregiver or driver would need to know how to load the wheelchair into the boot and help the wheelchair user into the car safely.

3. Welcab

In Japan, due to a rapidly ageing population, a whole new category of vehicles called 福祉車両 (meaning ‘Welfare Vehicles’) or Welcab in Japan, were created to make it easier to transport wheelchair-bound people. Recognizing that it was difficult to lift up and carry disabled people even if you’re physically strong, ‘Welcab’ technology has evolved to enable easy access by simply pushing in the wheelchair occupant straight into the car, with some utilizing motorized winches or lifts.
